The newest entry in the legendary 4X franchise is completely free to play for the next several days — no purchase, no card, just a Steam account.
The Deal
Sid Meier's Civilization VII, the latest installment in Firaxis Games' landmark turn-based strategy series published by 2K, is currently free to play for all Steam users as part of a limited Free Play Week. The free access window is live now and ends on Thursday, September 10, 2026 at 1:00 PM EDT (10:00 AM PDT), as displayed on the game's official Steam store page.
Normally priced at $69.99 for the Standard Edition, Civilization VII lets players lead an empire across three distinct Ages — Antiquity, Exploration and Modern — in solo campaigns or cross-platform online multiplayer. During the free period, the entire base game is unlocked with no content restrictions.
What's Free
Full access to Civilization VII (Standard Edition) on Steam through September 10 — every civilization, every Age, every system
Progress and achievements earned during the free window carry over if you later purchase the game on Steam, per 2K's official announcement
No sign-up beyond a standard free Steam account; no payment method required to play
Optional: the Standard Edition is currently 50% off ($34.99) in the accompanying sale through September 17, and the Deluxe Edition sale also ends September 10
How to Get It
Install the Steam client and sign in (account is free)
Open the official store page: https://store.steampowered.com/app/1295660/Sid_Meiers_Civilization_VII/
Click "Play Game" in the Free Play section — the page shows a live countdown to the deadline
Download (roughly 20 GB) and play until September 10, 1:00 PM EDT
Fine Print
This is free-to-play, not free-to-keep: when the window closes on September 10, access expires even if the game remains installed. Continuing after the event requires a purchase
Progress and achievements do persist into a future purchase on the same platform — 2K confirms this explicitly
Civilization VII's multiplayer requires a 2K account
Minimum specs are moderate (Core i5 / Ryzen 5 class CPU, 8 GB RAM, GTX 970 / R9 280X class GPU); check your rig before committing to the download
The free window is generous — long enough to learn the systems and complete a focused single-Age campaign — but a sprawling multi-Age run is unlikely to finish before the cutoff
Bottom Line
A full $69.99 AAA strategy game playable for nothing is about as good as free gaming gets, and with four full days remaining there's still time to build an empire from scratch. If Civilization VII clicks for you, the current 50% sale makes the upgrade decision cheaper than usual — and everything you accomplished during the free week comes with you.
